Whitby in south Yorkshire is where goths will gather and Camden is where they shop, but Leeds is arguably where the British goth was born.

Why Leeds matters to gothic culture

  • The Sisters of Mercy. Formed in Leeds in 1980, they became the defining goth rock band, and the black-on-black, shades-and-long-coat look they wore shaped the style for decades.
  • Le Phonographique. The basement club in the Merrion Centre is remembered as one of the country's first and longest-running goth nightspots.
  • The F Club. Leeds' legendary punk and post-punk night was the crucible the early goth bands came out of.
